     Before we get carried away, let me quickly introduce myself in case you haven’t heard of me yet.

      The music industry is in shambles.  It’s all sex, drugs, rock and roll.  Check out the magazines that have some bozo posing with half naked women and gangsta clothes on.  Look even closer and you’ll notice on his shirt the words “Sold My Sister For A Pack Of Smokes.” 

      It’s no wonder parents are encouraging their kids to take baseball instead of music lessons with you.  Picture this.  Kids are addicted to watching MTV videos while parents are crying inside… praying their kids don’t pick up an instrument and head down that dangerous path.  Today’s instant gratification, skin-deep culture is making it harder for you to earn great money teaching music lessons… or is it.

      Listen, you have to use what’s happening, step up to the plate and realize that it’s your job… wait… YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to educate parents about the benefits of lessons in such a compelling – hypnotic – way that you become the HERO and a POSITIVE role model for their kids. 

      Problem is… you keep selling parents on the music and not the character that’s being developed in the child.  Parents have fears and you keep telling them about your degrees, instrument, and records you played on.  THEY DON’T CARE.  They only care about how their child will turn out.  So let me give you…

 The 6 Leading Mistakes You’re Making As A Music Instructor and 
The Solutions To Make Your Wallet Fatter.

 #1: This mistake in teaching private lessons is charging by the hour.  It’s not the time that’s important, it’s the self esteem and modeling that’s occurring between you and the student.  Listen your student doesn’t get better by the extra 30 minutes he’s with you.  He gets better by the amount of time he goes home and practices.  The time with you should represent a role model of professional excellence.  The ideal of what a musician should be.  (if you have tattoos, smoke, and drive a 1972 gremlin, then keep reading).  Quit charging by the hour and charge based on benefits.  You don’t pay your dentist by the hour, you pay by the root canal.  In the upcoming bootcamp I’ll show you how to pitch this to parents in case they’ve been shopping around and found other local teachers who charge by the hour and are cheaper than you.  I’ll also show you the “levels” that each student has to move through, each level requiring a higher price for lessons.  Ultimately leading to your $4000 music lesson package. Remember, you’re not in the teaching music business.  You’re in the business of marketing your teaching music lessons.

 #2:  Lack of Commitment.  It is silly not to get a commitment from your student.  In a skin deep culture, where everything is instant access you MUST get them to commit.  So sell them on contracts.  Yes contracts.  I used to sell by the week and was BROKE and when I went to contracts BAMM… my income skyrocketed.  Ok, you’ll say there’s already a guy in town charging $15 an hour for lessons and there’s no room for me.  Hey stop it!  You need to compare apples to oranges here.  Yeah, he’s charging McDonald prices and his student is still treating mom and dad like road meat, tattooed and smoking after school.  Music lessons should change a child’s life.  At this amazing bootcamp, I’ll show you how to be perceived like the child is going to prestigious Harvard College, not the local community college.  I’ll also show you the step by step procedure to sell $4,000 packages and lock in contracts with the parents quickly handing over their credit cards.

 #3:  Not having scripts.  Everything I tell a parent is scripted.  From the first call to the final signature on a 3 year contract.  You can’t fumble on the phone with Ums, Uhs, etc.  You don’t just slap a contract in their face either.  You need to have scripts memorized.  Script that seeks out their desires and fears and hits them with how you can help.  Scripts are everything. (Yes, I’ll share them with you at the bootcamp.  The one to get them to come in for their first lesson and sign a contract is priceless.)

 #4:  Don’t Know How To Get Students.  This step will take hours to talk about.  There’s how to get into schools, direct marketing secrets, sales letters, mailing lists, newspaper inserts, val-pak, VIP’s, press releases, etc.  I’ve used them all.  Most will make you broke.  The three I’m using now are pulling in so many students that I don’t know what to do with.  I’ve consulted with musicians all over America and they all complain about NOT having enough students.  Not me.  You see, everyone loves music.  EVERYONE.  And when you talk to adults they all say they have or wish they had learned an instrument.  At the bootcamp, I’ll show you how to attract student like bees to honey.  The fact is you have to ATTRACT them.  They just don’t come knocking down their door.  Listen, in 2005 I needed to pick up 16 extra students to pay for a vacation to Catalina Island.  So, I sent out 4 pieces of paper to a special list I had and before the week was out I had 34 call and 19 actually signed contracts.  This is one of the best sections of the seminar. 

 #5:  Letting Kids Quit - Who Cares About Getting More Students If They All Quit.  The goal is to keep them coming and keep them paying.  And if you don’t have the retention tools in place, they’ll choose baseball over music lesson in a heart beat.  There are 5 retention tools you need to implement so they stay on board.  The obvious one I’ll tell you here is to get them to spend more money on “stuff.”  Videos, shirts, Cd’s you have for sale.  Things that tie them into the instrument.  Listen, when I golfed I bought everything, shirts, shoes, hats, clubs, bags, rags, the works.  Kept me in the game a lot longer than going out there with just a putter.  Anyways in a sense, the more they pay the more they stay.  At the bootcamp (now on DVD) I’ll share the 5 retention tools and the 9 streams of income that get them addicted to taking lessons with you. 

 #6:  Lack of personal development.  This is a biggie.  It’s what separates small change from big money.  Your personal development has to back up what you say.  It’s your actions not words that will have a parent pay more money.  So if you’re smoking and smell like whiskey when a parent comes by to possible sign up little jimmy – you’re done with.  She’ll rate you as a $15 an hour bozo.  The clothing I wear and the attitude I carry, all plays a part in the child’s future and the perception to the parents.  Be professional.  Show the parents you mean business when it comes to RESPECT.  And that the AC-DC shirts are off limits at your studio

      There are thousands of kids in your town who have a secret desire to jam.  But, parents have the association of sex, drugs and rock and roll and avoid supporting them taking music lessons.  Realize this is your fault for not EDUCATING the parents in your town.  Kids are riddled with MTV, and a skin deep culture, AND these are the kids who teach themselves in the basement and end up having losers for friends and playing out (under age) at smoke filled bars.  You need to be the HERO to the parents.
