I get a lot of emails but I wanted to share this really
short one with you because it confuses a lot of drummers.
Here it is:
Joe,
How many times should I practice a week?
Jason Raluni - love your tornado chops system.
J.S.: Thanks for the email Jason. I can tell you to practice everyday, and you may say, "No-Way, I'd rather
practice three times a week." And if I said practice three times per week, some might say, "But I heard two times a
week for longer hours is better." And if I say practice one day a week, you'll say, "But I know a program where
they recommend only practicing once a month."
Laugh all you want. But it's true.
The important thing is allowing me to share with you my "Transformations Practice" schedule. It will launch your
playing to the moon. Ok maybe just the stars.
You see Jason, for years I was told to just sit down and work on my weaknesses.
So, I'd diligently practice for 3 or 4 hours on sight-reading and rudiments.
But do you know what happened?
I BURNED OUT. Lost Focus. Didn't know where I was going. I was realizing that my limbs were not getting enough
muscle memory to engrain the "strengths" I was trying so hard to obtain.
So, I turned to articles in Modern Drummer and Drum magazine, but all I found were interviews with guys who had
the dream job of getting PAID TO PLAY.
*** Easy for them NOT easy for us.***
We live in the real world. Family, bills, & full time jobs.
So out of frustration I had to play around with a ton of structured practice sessions and stumbled upon one that
transformed my playing. Since then, I've been foaming at the mouth at all the progress I've made.
I call it "Transformational Practicing" and I recommend it to all my students. Obviously not all of them follow it.
The ones that do however are pouncing on all my other students.
- Here's The Details -
It's a 50-minute session broken up into 5 - 10 minute sections. It works on so many conscious and sub-conscious
levels and I'm currently writing a mini-report on it. I should have it done in about a month or so.
But don't wait here's how it's broken down.
1) 10 minutes warm up/stretching (feet, hands and body. Warm-ups and cool downs behind the set)
2) 10 minutes curriculum (lessons, or weaknesses to strengthen)
3) 10 minutes song/s with curriculum
4) 10 minutes meditation (active visualization on what you learned that day)
5) 10 minutes have fun - solos, playing to favorite music.
One of the keys to "Transformational Practicing" is the fact that you end your practice session on a HIGH, so you want
MORE.
Follow this schedule starting today, and in 13 days you'll be practicing with such enthusiasm you won't
believe it. Oh... and your new drumming skills will simply blow you away.
